Review of Battered Hearts Kele Moon

Battered Hearts 1: Defying the Odds.  Kele Moon

I received this book free via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I don’t gush and give false praise – I don’t believe that helps readers or authors so what you read is what I truly feel about a book.

Well, I’d recently read the two Eden books by Kele and loved them -so much that they had a second re read straight away. Kele is a new author to me so I was pleased to see the first two Battered Hearts series on Netgalley. I was hoping for more of the type that the Eden books are but these are far gentler – much softer romance story than the edgy, sexy Eden books.

Anyway…book one : Melody is a waitress, short on cash, escaped from violent ex husband and trying to avoid him finding her. Clay – gentle giant sort of guy, sweet and romantic when it comes to Melody but aggressive successful fighter when it comes to the ring. As you can guess they are attracted to each other – there’s some great banter with his friends, sister and brother Jules and Wyatt.

On the surface its a book I’d like, romance with some steamy sex scenes but in practice I felt it was too much like a 70’s Mills and Boon slightly sappy romance with some sex scenes thrown in to spice it up. Though they were well written they didn’t seem to fit the storyline somehow and the romance was just too…nice? I like lots of highs and lows, contrasts and angst, then the Happy Ever After.  I didn’t feel this did that, with the romance between Clay and Melody reminding me almost of an updated beauty and the beast type of feel but with it all running smoothly apart from the small patch towards the end. I didn’t feel anything in depth for either Clay or Melody, though well written they seemed flat to me. Too stereotypical with Mel being just too sweet and polly-anna ish and Clay being the gruff, unfriendly (apart from Jules and Wyatt) sullen fighter. I wanted to see Mel get angry, swear at her truck when it didn’t start – stuff like that, not just smile and be sweet or cry, to have more Personality and for Clay to be more proactive in getting to know Melody, rather than almost leaving it to chance and to Jules. Its a decent plot that for me needed that bit extra – still I’m a reader not a writer and though I can say what I’d like to read I haven’t a hope of ever actually doing it myself. Criticism is easy – doing the work though – that’s tough and beyond my talents! More could have been made of the violent ex situation earlier, and something needed to happened between them to tip the balance in the romance and create some tears… Well, that’s what I like anyway – I guess with M&B being so popular that’s not what lots of romance readers want so if that’s the sort of love story that you like then this book will be just perfect. Taste in books is very subjective and reviews need to make clear that they are personal – how I feel isn’t necessarily how you feel about a book, so if you enjoy the sort of books I like then you’re likely to find this one a bit lightweight.

Its well written and edited – there are still too many kindle books full of grammar and spelling mistakes but this isn’t thankfully. At 251 pages for £3.08 is reasonably priced – more so if its the type you’ll read over again. Stars: 3 and a half. Its better than just “OK” but not a four star good.
