Echo Prophecy (Echo Trilogy, #1) Lindsey Fairleigh.

As you’ll have guessed from my reviews I love paranormal romance, especially when there’s a solid, strong storyline. Echo gives all that and more, I was entranced by this book, and luckily started it on a free day as I couldn’t put it down til I’d finished. It’s one of those where you’re dying to know what will happen but then when you finally get to the end you feel sad, lost without the world and people that’s so gripped you for the last few hours.
This books starts in an innocuous way, we meet Lex as a post grad student and then….she gets recruited for a dream expedition, meets the delicious sexy director Marcus, and learns more about her past. She starts to have weird dreams, finds out they’re not dreams as such but insights into her past and present, and possibly her future…and its all allied to her strange parentage, which in turn connects closely to her interest in ancient languages and Egyptian mythology. There’s some massive shocks in store for her, and a steep learning curve if she’s to stay one step ahead of the people out to capture or kill her.
Lex was a terrific character, always been slightly alone with few friends, and as she learns more some of her past begins to make sense. When she meets Marcus there’s an instant attraction between them and that was done so well, the way they flirt and always stop just this side of the line, both knowing they will cross, but prolonging the initial stages and enjoying it. Its really erotic but with so much of the overt in-your-face tasteless stuff that proliferates. Its how to make just a glance or a touch feel simmering, smouldering, sexy. When Marcus learns who she really is he’s – well, frankly there’s only one way to describe him – an ar*se! I understand why of course, he was in shock, but his behaviour – like I said – ar*se 🙂
Lex runs through all sorts of emotions, love, hate, sadness, happiness, loves her family but is distraught at what she learns about her parentage…its shock after shock after shock for her. She goes through some terrible trauma, after a date with a new friend, but finds out its all part of the parentage she has. Marcus is a real sex on legs Hottie, but has an arrogance that I suppose comes from his years, he’s a seductive, very independent womaniser, and yet when he meets Lex he’s taken by surprise at how strongly he feels for her, and not sure he likes that.
The other characters were good too, all had specific parts in the novel and fitted perfectly. Lindsey has the ability to create characters that feel real despite our knowing they aren’t human, and the way she outlines the story, the mythology and how it related to Lex real world is brilliant. Enough information for the reader to understand the world and the problems, even if their knowledge of Mythology is shaky, and yet not so much that the reader feels overloaded and switches off. I’ve read novels like that where the story is brilliant, but there’s so much info that’s over my head I feel detached from the story. I need to feel I’m there, feeling what Lex feels, happy when she is and crying when she’s upset. I did all that, not quite tears but a real lump in my throat at times.
I love, love, love this book, its to me very like, in writing style not content, to Deborah Harkness’ Discovery of Witches or Fairwick Chronicles by Carol Goodman. I loved those, good books for thinking readers, who want to work out the puzzles and not have them spoon-fed to them. There’s times when you want to enjoy something light of course, but a real treat is a book like these where you feel transported to another world, where you get to the end, blink and realise you’ve been engrossed for hours.
Priced at £3.99 for 384 pages/675kb/115,000 words (hurrah for the longer novel!) it’s a real bargain and one to read and re read. I’m waiting impatiently for the next two books 🙂
Stars: its one of those where I wish there was a special 5 plus selection, I’m picky about my fives but some books really need a special category and this is one, still, having to comply with standard I’m going for a five of course.

About jeanniezelos

I'm an avid reader, love my kindle and I have my head in a novel for hours daily : ) Mum used to say I'd read toilet paper if it was printed- it wasn't, so i had to contend myself with the back and sides of the cereal packets. I've always Needed to read and we had few books when i was a child hence my penchant for reading anything including adverts then... I review mainly contemporary, erotic and paranormal romance books though dystopian and urban fantasy also appeal. I'm currently rated around the 300 mark on for my reviews. I try to keep them structured and to say what I do and don't like about a book so other readers can use my review as a guide to whether they may enjoy the book.
