How to Handle a Cowboy (Cowboys of Decker Ranch)

How to Handle a Cowboy. Joanne Kennedy
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.
Reading is escapism for me like many other people, so though I know nothing of cowboys, rodeos and ranching in real life I still need to feel that the scene and people are real. This books does that, Ridge was a real person, and I felt for him after all those years of goal setting, working to a plan to have to stand back and rethink came hard to him and he was lost…Then he met Sierra, and a way forward opened up. Sierra is terrific, she had a real empathy for the kids, lost as they were; used, abused and abandoned by the very people who should protect them.
Ridge and Sienna had a mixed reaction when they met, and there was a fierce attraction between them both that neither wanted, but were unable to step back from. When they did get together those scenes were Hot! Very hot, sensual and spicy, steamy and erotic…
The boys – oh how I felt for those. Sadly there’s far, far too many like that in real life 😦 kids who’ve been abandoned, rejected, found their life contains only problems and no love. Sierra was trying to do her best to get them past their horrific backgrounds, protect them and help them grow into strong and caring individuals. Its a tough job though for anyone, and faced with the sheriff whose view was they were simply troublemakers in the making, a view no doubt shared by others in the town, she’d a lot of headway to make. Ridge ends up helping with that, and I love the scenes on his ranch. Of course in real life as a horse owner I know that the parts involving the kids and the horses, the “join up” the riding etc were very much using Artistic Licence as it were, but it made for some emotional moments imaging it was real. Its true that often kids – and adults, I’ve done it myself – can talk and respond to animals when they can’t relate with people.
I enjoyed much about this book, the scenery , the people, the animals, what didn’t work so well for me was the romance. It all went too smoothly – and I need the drama of problems, misunderstandings, breakups and make-ups. There were those in the novel, but in such a way that they just didn’t give me enough emotion, they were over too quickly and it was back to smiles, and I need to wallow in the sad bits – though the HEA is a must of course! It’s priced at £4.31 for 416 pages, so a good long novel if its the sort you want, a lovely story, well written, with realism in the places and people, but low on heartbreak, lots of sweet and little sour. There are readers who want that and if its you then this book will be perfect.
Stars: three and a half.

About jeanniezelos

I'm an avid reader, love my kindle and I have my head in a novel for hours daily : ) Mum used to say I'd read toilet paper if it was printed- it wasn't, so i had to contend myself with the back and sides of the cereal packets. I've always Needed to read and we had few books when i was a child hence my penchant for reading anything including adverts then... I review mainly contemporary, erotic and paranormal romance books though dystopian and urban fantasy also appeal. I'm currently rated around the 300 mark on for my reviews. I try to keep them structured and to say what I do and don't like about a book so other readers can use my review as a guide to whether they may enjoy the book.
