Misconceptions, Blu Daniels

Misconceptions

Having a baby is one thing. But having FOUR of them with the jerk who used you…now that’s another. After finally ending her year-long fling with a man she only refers to as Bad Habit, the narcissistic, temperamental Alexandria Stone moves back home to New York to start her
dream job. That is, until she discovers she’s pregnant, with quadruplets. When a business merger leaves her jobless and penniless, she has no other choice but to move to Atlanta with Bad Habit, a seductive, callous man she despises due to their rocky past. Desperate to have a picture-perfect life, Alex becomes convinced she must make Bad Habit fall in love with her, no matter the cost.
Misconceptions is a hilarious and sexy nine-month chronicle of Alexandria’s doomed quest for a perfect life.

Misconceptions, Blu Daniels
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
So, I enjoy humour in my romance and this looked fun. It was, but with real emotional drama too. When we first meet Alex she’s having a fling – well a 12 month or so fling – with someone we just get to know as Bad Habit. She’s about to move cross country for work, and he’s sort of asking her to stay, but only sort of, as he’s a bit of a jerk who doesn’t commit to more than hot sex with her. They don’t date, don’t go out in public, but just have this weird relationship based on sex, OK hot, erotic sex but that’s it. I felt she deserved more, and although she seemed confident on the outside that she was insecure inside. That’s why she wouldn’t ask him for more as she feels he’ll just go…and she doesn’t really think she deserves more. She’s quite shallow in a way, obsessed by appearances, and really has little interest in anything but fashion, her ambition and Michelle Obama. Yes. Michelle is her real hero, a woman who’s always put together, confident and has a happy family around her. Its kind of sad in a way, Alex parents and family love her, but she’s still searching for something more. Recognition? I don’t really know – I just get this feel of emptiness from her.
Anyway there she is in her new job, and living back with family while she finds her feet and wham! She finds out she’s pregnant…..that’s a shock, she’s on the pill and Bad Habit always uses condoms. For several weeks it seems she just puts it out of her mind, and ignores it. She’s still on probation at work so medical insurance won’t kick in til she’s been there three months, and she could buy a pair of Laboutins for the cost of a doctors visit, so she doesn’t do anything about it. Then she finally goes to doc, she’s been feeling pretty grim, and still at the back of her mind she seems to think the three pregnancy tests could be wrong…shock no two- Four babies! Then on the same day, on top of that shocker, a works merger leaves her jobless with no benefits as she’s still not been there the three months. Her head is spinning, thoughts of her poor parents tiny house with her and four babies in it….for someone whose hardest decision til now has been which shoes to pair with which outfit she’s in hell.
We get all this from her journal, packed with humour via the way she writes and thinks. You can’t help smiling when this poor girl goes from fahionista to pregnant mum of four….what a life change. True to form Bad Habit doesn’t return her calls and texts, finally she has to text him she’s pregnant and….he asks if its his, all the jerk things you expect from him.
Then from questioning whether he’s the father, and wanting nothing to do with being one, once she’s jobless and potentially homeless ( parents house isn’t really on with four babies) he suddenly takes over. .. sends her a plane ticket and moves her in. the sex is as hot as ever, and we see more of him but yes, he is the real jerk he seemed. She’s stuck in the house, growing larger by the day, missing family and friends, yet he’s out working and living it up, coming back smelling of perfume and bringing her to the edge with jealousy. Generally behaving as he did before she moved in. She decides she’s got to make him fall in love with her, and sets about being Miss Perfect Housewife. Sadly she’s an awful lot to learn, and there’s some funny moments til she does. There’s incidents with police, incidents with neighbours, disruptions to the quiet life BH had before…Alex seems to come with disaster attached. She’s trapped in a house with no friends and only BH for company, and all he seems to do is be asleep or want sex. Communication? Nope not happening. Her attempts to get him to fall in love are really funny, not that she intends that. And…its seeping away at her, she’s getting huge, abandoned the power suits for baggy sweats and feels a mess.
I kept wondering why she bothered, BH was such an awful person, uncaring and callous it seemed. Though she’s still shallow, and at times makes decisions that wanted me to tear my hair out, I still felt she deserved proper support. Then things go further awry, and he seems to be a bit different for a while. I felt he was coming round to being the person she needed, and maybe there were some kinds of excuse for his behaviour. She’s not the easiest of people to live with, scatty, over dramatic and at times a walking disaster. Maybe there were some excuses? But not for the playing away, the womanising, that’s never right! No excuses for that…IMO of course. We see a potential different side to BH, and maybe something of what attracts Alex. She’s struggling though and almost given up. I really felt for her, some of her diary jottings were funny but sometimes they were heartbreaking. She couldn’t help the situation they were in and yet it seemed she was the only one bearing the cost of it.
Its ends beautifully, and can be read as a standalone with the reader imagining their future but…there’s a snippet of book two at the end, and its from BH voice, shows his thoughts which aren’t always his actions. Its set about a year or so after this, and just when I think he’s changed…there’s mention of a Tiffany and it seems he’s been playing away …arghhh B* stard, jerk, how could he after all that had happened? I want that book now!
Stars: I’m hovering over five, but its not quite that – four and a half.
