Seeing Red, Holley Trent.
Review from jeannie zelos book reviews
I enjoyed the first two in this series, but wasn’t quite as taken with this one. Its still a good read, but the character of Megan really annoyed me. She’d married her first husband in a fit of rebellion against her upbringing, and Spike turned out to be a stereotypical rock star, unfaithful, uncaring and would do anything for publicity. They divorced and she is bringing up their son Toby. The publicity about the break-up has made her angry, she’s portrayed as Poor Meg in the media and doesn’t like it, and in an effort to offset that she bought herself a huge engagement ring. Then of course she needed a husband! Luckily her friends ( from the first two books ) come to the rescue and Seth agrees to marry her, for a temporary time before they’ll get divorced. I wondered why – he didn’t seem to get much out of it, didn’t need to marry her to stay in the country or anything, but as the story continued and I learned more about him I think I understood his motives, friends and having a family are very important to him, and parents were something he lacked growing up.
I loved all the characters except Meg, met many of them in previous books, and was great to see how their relationships progressing. Meg, she seemed so shallow, worrying about superficial things, about appearances rather than the people. I felt she verged on cruel to Seth at times, even if it was unintended. She never seemed to look at him as a person, just someone to fill the role she needed, and provide her with some smoking hot sex occasionally.
Slowly the book drew together all the parties, Meg and her parents, her friends and the way they all supported each other, Seth, lovely Seth 🙂 , and her jerk ex husband and manager. They really were a sleazy duo – perfect characterisation 🙂 and Seth showed up so well against them, even though Toby wasn’t his actual son. Toby was such a sweet boy, and I loved the way he and Seth interacted, it showed just how much he needed someone like Seth. Sometimes I felt Meg didn’t really understand Toby and was overly strict, and then Seth came along and Toby was so happy.
When things went wrong – I was cheering for Seth, even though it wasn’t what he wanted. I felt it was good that at last he made a stand, forced Meg to look at him, at what she was doing to everybody, and how she was the key to a door that could lead to happiness for all of them if only she’d walk through it.
Stars: Four. It’s a great book but Meg spoiled it for me, I just didn’t like her 😦 though towards the end I was happier, and that brought down the star rating a bit. I need to like and be rooting for the leads, and though Seth was perfect Meg, well….. couldn’t feel and empathise for her.
