Noble Metals, L.A.Witt

Noble Metals, L.A.Witt
Review from jeannie zelos book reviews
L A Witt is one of my favourite m/m authors so I was looking forward to this book. I love this time period in books too – there’s such a feeling of desperation – will they strike it rich or not, and the variety of characters that haunt the goldfields is incredible.
So we meet Robert, came to seek his fortune with his brothers but they were tempted by the lure of the ladies and the cards, and they lost all their money there and neeeded to earn more. The authorities are very strict on who they let into each country, and set targets for supplies each person needs to meet. Robert is a very small, slight person so stronger people usually win out on the jobs front, and he’s been reduced to working as a barman/whore to try to earn enough. He’s desparate to get out of this life and hoping to get on someone’s team, but again one look and they think he’s not strong enough. Then along comes John…John’s searching for platinum, usually found in small amouts on the goldfields, and he needs help but it needs to be someone he can trust, and he has limited funds. After a night together he accepts Roberts offer to come with him for half whatever someone else would cost.
It’s a dangerous and gruelling journey and the invention John is carrying is very precious to him, but he has competitiors in the field and they’ll do anything to get their hands on the device. They need to keep it secret from the other prospectors too, people are so desperate that they’ll stop at nothing to get ahead.
I loved the way we travelled with them, feeling the hardships and the sheer exhaustion after a heavy day. I hadn’t realised its a steampunk type novel too – usually I steeer away from them, but it was minimal here mainly confined to a transport substitute for horses they call a Mech, its a kind of huge brass spider….
I didn’t really feel connected to the characters though in the way I usually do with an LA book, and I felt the romance didn’t have that “pull” I expect, that will they/won’t they feel, the slow build up of looks, touches and feelings, though of course its difficult in this setting where clothes off can mean freezing to death, that would be a real romance killer!! Even when things went wrong though I was sad, I wasn’t really upset, I didn’t feel that awful, heartbreaking tug at my emotions. I was sorry for them but not tearful…and I need that deep sadness otherwise the upturn doesn’t mean so much.
It’s a well written book, and an interesting setting but for me its not a re reader.
Stars: Three – its a good book, but I’ve read far better from LA.

About jeanniezelos

I'm an avid reader, love my kindle and I have my head in a novel for hours daily : ) Mum used to say I'd read toilet paper if it was printed- it wasn't, so i had to contend myself with the back and sides of the cereal packets. I've always Needed to read and we had few books when i was a child hence my penchant for reading anything including adverts then... I review mainly contemporary, erotic and paranormal romance books though dystopian and urban fantasy also appeal. I'm currently rated around the 300 mark on for my reviews. I try to keep them structured and to say what I do and don't like about a book so other readers can use my review as a guide to whether they may enjoy the book.
