Taming Ryder (Souls of the Knight Book 2)

Taming Ryder, (Souls of the Knight 2),  Nicola Haken
Review from jeannie zelos book reviews
I enjoyed Being Sawyer Knight and liked what I’d read about Ryder there so was pleased to get the chance to review this one.
I didn’t get the same feel of drama and angst as the first novel though. Clearly both Ryder and Mason have some real demons in their backgrounds, but they seemed to spend lots of time ignoring them. It seemed to me poor Mason got the short straw, with Ryder giving him the come on and then pushing him away, and when they did finally part ways it was very abrupt and poor Mason left out in the cold – literally. That just wasn’t fair of Ryder. Then his spiral down again – well, I did understand why but he’d had and was still getting so much support from his friends I didn’t see why he treated Mason that way.
There were other stories too tucked in here, the problems of the financing of the company and Ryder’s past being two major ones. The financing issue though just felt a bit like a filler, I couldn’t really see what it added to the novel but Ryder’s past – wow! That was a big ( and sadly I suspect very real ) issue. Though I liked both Ryder and Mason their romance didn’t feel meant to be in the way Sawyer and Jake were. I think I needed to see more tenderness, more togetherness from them and not just some sex scenes, some disagreements and hiding from each other….I just didn’t get a sense of them being right as a couple – at the beginning anyway. Once we got onto the things that Ryder revealed from his past and the awful parents he had a sense of shock came in and I could feel Mason’s protectiveness and sense of connection to Ryder. He felt hurt for Ryder, and then when things went from bad to worse that was all action and kept me reading.
Overall I enjoyed the book, but not as much as the first, I felt too much was just day to day irrelevancies and missed out on the tenderness that grows usually in M/M romances. Maybe it was the porn setting, but I felt that there was sex here without much feeling to it, necessary in the case of the filming but still lacking between romantic partners.
Stars: Three and a half. I found the first part just didn’t really gel with me, felt unreal and I didn’t connect well with the problems. The finish though was very good. .

You met Ryder Richardson in Being Sawyer Knight. Now, this is his story.

I’ve done it. I’ve stuck a whopping two fingers up at my parents, I’ve made a name for myself as one of the world’s biggest porn stars and I’ve finally found a family I belong in.

Life is amazing. I get paid to do all my favourite things. Fuck. Party. Travel the world. What’s not to love?

And then he comes along. Mason George – Back Door Studio’s newest exclusive model and the guy who has the potential to either fuck it all up, or take me on the best ride of my life.

~ Ryder
I’m desperate. I’ve got nothing and nobody left. Entering the daunting world of adult entertainment is less of a dream and more of a necessity. Signing as Back Door Studio’s latest model has the ability to either ruin or make me, but I made a vow at my first audition never to let myself regret it.

I continue to question myself each day, but no amount of whats, whys or what ifs will change where I am or where I’m heading. Am I strong enough to do this? To embrace it? To enjoy it? I have no idea.

The only thing I’m certain of, is that if anyone can teach me who I’m supposed to be, it’s Ryder Richardson.

~ Mason

Meet the Author:
Author of the New Adult/Contemporary novels Missing Pieces, Saving Amy and the Take My Hand series, and m/m erotic romance Being Sawyer Knight.

I live in Rochdale, England with my wonderful family and when I’m not playing with my imaginary friends I can usually be found looking after my four adorable (sometimes!) children (six if you include the dogs, seven if you include the hubby!) or studying towards my English Literature degree.

All in all I’m just an ordinary mum with an addiction to reading about hot book guys, writing about hot book guys and Pepsi Max! Oh, and if my kids ever ask… I moonlight as the Pink Power Ranger 😉
