The Secret Prince, Justine Lewis

The Secret Prince, Justine Lewis
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
I wasn’t wholly convinced by this book, it seemed a little too unrealistic even though thr Royals were from a small country I couldn’t see the informality and lack of security as genuine and it felt like a story, not reality. I need a book to feel at glimpse of real so that I can feel part of it.
Maddie, I really liked her at first, and when she met the prince accidently she was so open and genuine, and Alex was such a nice guy I wanted more for them. Then all is revealed and it brings out the worse in both of them, she feels deceived and humiliated, he hates journalists and feels he’s been made a fool of. Harsh words are said that can’t easily be retracted. At that point in  they both believe what they feel about the others profession, so in a way I understand but after some consideration Maddie feels she’s been a bit OTT but its too late, Alex has returned home. He’s still cross though and dislikes her.
Then she gets the chance to visit, Alex keeps her close thinking he’ll be able to control what she hears and so what she writes. She’s convinced he’s hiding something and at this point I disliked her. Her questions were rude and intrusive. She uses the argument the public deserve to know all – and that’s something I really hate. The family’s grief over the death of Alex older brother should have been private, and I can’t see why the public deserve to know anything about it. Still, that’s why I’d never make a journalist and Maddie is one….I get really annoyed at papers and TV when their lines of questions get beyond a certain point.
I got to the point where I felt Maddie was so judgemental that she didn’t deserve Alex, he’d served his country in the forces and then was stepping up as heir even though he didn’t want it. In contrast Maddie had job hopped and was just after a story, at the price of personal integrity it seemed to me. Still, as ever I’m not writing the story, and other readers will view it differently. In a way I’m being the same kind of judgemental I accuse Maddie of….and I just want the Maddie we first met – the one where I could feel the connection between her and Alex. The question is, can that be the real Maddie and can seeing more of how royalty works change her views.

Stars: two and a half. It didn’t quite make the three but there were parts I enjoyed. ARC supplied by Netgalley and publishers
