The Accidental Alchemist (An Accidental Alchemist Mystery)

Review from jeannie zelos book reviews
This was a fun read, sort of like a Miss Marple with humour and magic. Alchemy is a fascinating subject, and Zoe was a student a  couple of centuries ago. She’d accidentally transformed herself though into an immortal, and since them she’s been living life trying not to get noticed. She’s had some heartbreak in her past, and she still feels she perhaps could have done something different, so she’s also carrying a misplaced load of guilt. Finally she’s found somewhere she thinks she can settle and put roots down,  but her problems start the day after the move when her builder turns up dead…on her doorstep. From there its a tangled web of events, with the locals, some of whom seen to have secrets, the detective Max Liu, the teens- Brixton, Veronica and Ethan, who get involved, Brixton very closely. He’s a good kid, but has had some trouble in his past and fancies himself as a super sleuth. Zoe needs to rein him in at times. Add in the gargoyle  Dorian who’s living through some accidental spell but deteriorating, the search for the lost book he needs to heal, which of course has to be kept secret, and the murder and attempted murder of another village inhabitant and its a story packed with plots and fun. Zoe is a Vegan and I enjoyed the description of the foods she ate, and the recipes French food lover Dorian concocted using Vegan ingredients.
The deeper Zoe, Brixton and Dorian get into the search for the murderer and the lost book, the more the mysteries pile up and the suspect list grows. It seems even in an innocuous village everyone is carrying secrets.
Its a fun read, light and fluffy, and full of gentle humour, mystical moments and snippets of times past.
Stars: Four – enjoyable, easy to read novel

About jeanniezelos

I'm an avid reader, love my kindle and I have my head in a novel for hours daily : ) Mum used to say I'd read toilet paper if it was printed- it wasn't, so i had to contend myself with the back and sides of the cereal packets. I've always Needed to read and we had few books when i was a child hence my penchant for reading anything including adverts then... I review mainly contemporary, erotic and paranormal romance books though dystopian and urban fantasy also appeal. I'm currently rated around the 300 mark on for my reviews. I try to keep them structured and to say what I do and don't like about a book so other readers can use my review as a guide to whether they may enjoy the book.
