Once Upon a Dare, Jennifer Bonds

Once Upon a Dare, Jennifer Bonds
Genre:  Romance
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
This was a well written book, but the story just didn’t grab me. I’ve read books based around the same situation as this that have been fantastic, and was hoping for much from this one. I liked the characters but didn’t love them, didn’t really see why Olivia went off at the deep end when Cole did what he did – sure he was wrong, but I just felt her reaction OTT and childish. The sex between them was hot, but a book needs more than that for me. Though they did work things out in the end I didn’t really feel the romance between them, its tough when its all hidden, no dates or anything, just a few hot and sensual interludes. I needed more of a connection between them, more romancing, more story all round, and as I wasn’t feeling the love so to speak, when things went wrong it didn’t really affect me emotionally. I need to get invested in the characters and their story, to want things to work out for them but here…well, it all seemed a bit bland for me. It’s a good book, but for me not a great one. As ever though that’s just my view and others will love this novel – it’d be a dull world if everyone wanted the same story.
Stars: Three, a good novel just not a great one for me.

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
I really enjoyed the first three books in this series, where Abby and Nathaniel were getting together, and all the problems they needed to overcome. The last book though – The Chalet – where they are now together and taking their life forward I felt was a bit underwhelming for me, and this one feels very much the same. I think its one of those where it’s me not the book, in that for me the best enjoyment comes from them working through problems and barriers to be together, and now that they are the entertainment factor has been lost for me.
We’re a few years into the future with the couple having two young children. Abby’s been blogging anonymously about her journey as a submissive, her blog gets seen and she is offered a fantastic new opportunity. Nathaniel is very supportive but he’s stretched thin at work, and seems to be needing more and more to let out his Dominant side. There’s lots of sexy, seductive scenes involving this, and its clear to me I’m not a sub as I’d have been reacting to things in a very different way to Abby!! Still, Tara explains all the thinking behinds the actions and motives and that works. I may not react the same but I can see why Abby does, and what Nathaniel is doing.  I felt to a degree that sex had become the story here, that there was more emphasis on that than a solid plot. I need the story first and sex second, though of course not everyone does. The most interesting part for me was towards the end, maybe the last third or so when a new character is introduced. She’s very obviously attracted to Nathaniel, and makes it clear she’s prepared to act on it. She’s going to become more involved in Nathaniel’s business in the future so some fireworks may spark from that…who knows? I suspect for me though this book is the last I want to read, unless its going to be very explosive. I like action and drama, problems and solutions, but in the last two I just didn’t really feel them.
Stars:  Three, a good continuation of their story but for me the real magic seems to have gone.
