The Espionage Effect, Kat Bastion and Stone Bastion

The Espionage Effect,  Kat Bastion and Stone Bastion
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre:  Romantic suspense, Literature/Fiction ( adult)
This is a full length standalone – hurrah, a whole book in one go. I do love series, but the current trend for splitting books in to two or three parts when they could just as well be one makes me a bit irritated, and when they end in cliff-hangers and leave reader waiting for months, years even…..mad, angry mad. so hurrah for a whole book, and that Kat and Stone’s Weddings series consists of connected but complete reads.
So, I loved Kat’s Magick story, and the duo’s No Weddings series, and wondered how I’d take to this new genre. Well, it was a fun read but….the first half just didn’t really resonate with me. I felt that for someone so intelligent Devin would have asked more questions, been more inquisitive of Alec. I just couldn’t see her as being so accepting as she was. Add in that the first half seemed so…wordy. I often comment that certain books are too light, too simplistic for me, but this seems to go the other way. I understood that Devin’s talents needed to be explained, and I got to grips with her extraordinary mind quickly, but got tired of reading over and over the minute details of every event and place she saw….after the halfway mark ( and I struggled to continue TBH til then) things seemed to get more clear, more believable – in the fictional way of course.
Its a sexy read, full of action and suspense, but somehow though I enjoyed it I just didn’t feel really connected to either Alec or Devin. It a story that  got lots of twists and turns, deals and double dealing, and towards the end I really felt for Devin. After all that had been revealed who could she trust? Was Alec who he says, doing what he says or is that just another twist, anther lie…
It’s a good read, but for me not a five star as I’d hoped. Still, I’ll be keen to see what else the duo come up with
Note: A portion of the net proceeds from The Espionage Effect, the No Weddings Series, the Highland Legends Series, and all other books we publish, will also support Covenant House and World Vision, and the below charities that fight against human trafficking and support rescued and rehabilitating victims.
Stars: Four, a solid suspense read.

About jeanniezelos

I'm an avid reader, love my kindle and I have my head in a novel for hours daily : ) Mum used to say I'd read toilet paper if it was printed- it wasn't, so i had to contend myself with the back and sides of the cereal packets. I've always Needed to read and we had few books when i was a child hence my penchant for reading anything including adverts then... I review mainly contemporary, erotic and paranormal romance books though dystopian and urban fantasy also appeal. I'm currently rated around the 300 mark on for my reviews. I try to keep them structured and to say what I do and don't like about a book so other readers can use my review as a guide to whether they may enjoy the book.
