Midnight Burning, Karissa Laurel

Midnight Burning, Karissa Laurel
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: Romance, Sci-fi and fantasy
Well, wow! What a fabulous story. I was blown away by this book. I wasn’t sure what to expect, hadn’t heard of the author, couldn’t find out much about her, but the book is already out so I reads the sample and….was hooked on the story. I was in a bit of a reading slump having somehow picked some books that were just meh….for me anyway, reading is always a personal journey. then I picked up this and another great fantasy read, Amy Lane’s Vulnerable and it brought me back to just why I love to read.
It starts off fairly innocuously, with Solina going to Alaska, to see what she can find out about her twin brother’s murder.No-one knows who, how or why he was killed and there doesn’t seem to be much investigation going on. . She’s been having nightmares about him being killed by a slavering, vicious wolf. She’s had prophetic dreams and visions at times before, and she can’t leave the chance to find some justice for her brother. It takes her into a world of danger though, involving Mani’s employer and his friends, and bringing into play what seems like a ridiculous theory about Norse Gods and Ragnarok, but which seems to become more and more relevant.
There’s a number of major characters. Solina of course, Mani’s girlfriend Skyla, his employer Thorin, and his best friend Val. All play a much deeper part than it seems. Skyla is determined to find out who killed Mani, Thorin wants Solina to leave everything and go home, he’s kind of an overbearing jerk to begin, and then there’s Val…he’s like an eternal playboy and wants in Solina’s pants. She describes him as Patron Saint of the Perpetual Erection – I just loved that phrase and it was so apt…
As time goes by the dangers stack up, the people involved become more numerous, and its a time when Solina doesn’t know who to trust. Skyla makes the grade but everyone else seems to have hidden secrets. Val and Thorin both get overprotective and seem to have some kind of aggression between them, and Val gets more and more jealous of Thorin and persistent towards Solina. Thorin veers from jerk to something more, more appealing, more desirable and then back to jerk. There Helen too, just how and where does she fit in? I loved her character, I adore a “good” nasty Winking smile and she’s just perfect.
Its unusual to get a book based around Norse legends, and this one is just perfect. It ends at a natural point but damn it – I want the next book NOW. write quicker Karissa, I’m desperate to know what happens next, hooked on these people and the plots. When it comes down to it I’m team Thorin, liked Val best at first but at the moment Thorin gets my vote! The romance angle though is very much secondary to everything else going on, so don’t be put off if you’re not a romance lover. Its simply another strand of the story so far.

Stars: Five, a cracking first book, and one to look out for. For fantasy lovers who want more than a sappy romance, want a real plot with something different, solid dangers and a romance triangle this is just perfect.

About jeanniezelos

I'm an avid reader, love my kindle and I have my head in a novel for hours daily : ) Mum used to say I'd read toilet paper if it was printed- it wasn't, so i had to contend myself with the back and sides of the cereal packets. I've always Needed to read and we had few books when i was a child hence my penchant for reading anything including adverts then... I review mainly contemporary, erotic and paranormal romance books though dystopian and urban fantasy also appeal. I'm currently rated around the 300 mark on amazon.co.uk for my reviews. I try to keep them structured and to say what I do and don't like about a book so other readers can use my review as a guide to whether they may enjoy the book.
