The Stage, A Phoenix Rising Novel: Book One, Rebecca Shelby

The Stage, A Phoenix Rising Novel: Book One,   Rebecca Shelby
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: New Adult, Romance,

I hate reality TV – actually I’ve seen very little TV for around five years now, but somehow I’ve found I really enjoy novels set around the plot of IT…go figure ;- ) So of course when I saw this, and read the sample it was a must read for me.
Its a great book, perfect blend of romance, drama and bits of the competition. there are some really interesting personalities and minor plots as well as the main ones of the romance and the competition. They’re both  very centred around Mia and Kolton of course, we do see other contestants,  mentors, staff and others ,but it’s mostly just these two.
Its clear very early on how Kolton feels about Mia, and its pretty quickly clear that she feels the same even though his intensity scares her, and of course the programme organisers prohibit any kind of personal interaction. Kolton’s a rock star though, a huge draw to the audience, and he uses that to get what he wants, which is Mia and Riley, under his protection. I could understand why she was scared at times, angry at others, he really was OTT sometimes, going all out for what he saw as needed. Turns out he was right in some respects, but in others it was his actions that brought the dangers.
There’s parts of it, especially some of his actions, that were just so OTT they felt a little odd, and some of the Mia Phoenix name, the fires, the references to the Phoenix relevance felt a bit overdone and cheesy. Kind of milked for maximum impact but sometimes Less is More and that’s the way I felt about how this part worked for me. Less would have felt more natural and less cheesy. Still, that’s me * shrug*
I love NA reads for the drama, and that was here in spades. That worked really well for me, lost of interesting sub plots, behind the scenes bitchiness, Kolton’s past gossiped about, issues from jealous exes – it seemed there was always something going on. Mia’s younger sister Riley was great too, she felt so real and added another layer to Mia. I kind of wished both Mia and Kolton were a little older, she felt mature beyond 19 – maybe because of what she’d been through, and kolton too felt more like someone in his early thirties than 28.
the book ends on a really good point and the story could finish there easily, making an excellent stand alone read, but there’s an intro to the next book, a continuation of their story and being me I had to read it….but luckily that’s already out so it’s now on my kindle ;- ) just need the time to read it – somehow my review list has grown a bit long again, all books I want to read of course and feel I need to before continuing with this story. So many books so little time!!
Stars: Five, It’s a great read, full drama and action and a solid romance.

About jeanniezelos

I'm an avid reader, love my kindle and I have my head in a novel for hours daily : ) Mum used to say I'd read toilet paper if it was printed- it wasn't, so i had to contend myself with the back and sides of the cereal packets. I've always Needed to read and we had few books when i was a child hence my penchant for reading anything including adverts then... I review mainly contemporary, erotic and paranormal romance books though dystopian and urban fantasy also appeal. I'm currently rated around the 300 mark on amazon.co.uk for my reviews. I try to keep them structured and to say what I do and don't like about a book so other readers can use my review as a guide to whether they may enjoy the book.
