The Great Estate, Sherri Browning

The Great Estate, Sherri Browning

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre:  Romance, Historical.

Well, the Downton tag in the blurb pulled me in. Over the years I’ve read some great novels that cover life in part of one of the big Houses of the past. There’s something fascinating about the hierarchy, the way everyone plays their part, and the household becomes almost like a tiny, insular country of itself. Sadly though this book was perfectly well written and had likeable characters I felt there was too much missing for me and I didn’t enjoy it.

I liked the characters – and that was part of the trouble. It was all so..nice…from the people to the story. No nasty, evil characters, no real drama, or plots that make you wonder what’s going to happen. Somehow its all so sweet, so pleasant that you just know everything is going to work out well. I was thinking the separation from Sophia and Gabriel might lead to drama but no…nothing much there, nothing unpredictable, then maybe the mother-in-law – but though she’s interfering nothing really developed, maybe the political side, the way Sophia has grown interested over the past year, or perhaps the plot that erupts later in the book. Nope, none of them really held me.

Its a sweet book, well written and likeable – if you just want something easy to read that’s not going to need much thinking. For me I need more and that’s why my rating is low – it’s a reflection of my personal view and not of the actual quality of the novel or the writing.

Stars: two, just not one for me

About jeanniezelos

I'm an avid reader, love my kindle and I have my head in a novel for hours daily : ) Mum used to say I'd read toilet paper if it was printed- it wasn't, so i had to contend myself with the back and sides of the cereal packets. I've always Needed to read and we had few books when i was a child hence my penchant for reading anything including adverts then... I review mainly contemporary, erotic and paranormal romance books though dystopian and urban fantasy also appeal. I'm currently rated around the 300 mark on for my reviews. I try to keep them structured and to say what I do and don't like about a book so other readers can use my review as a guide to whether they may enjoy the book.
