Wilde at Heart, A Wilde Security Novel, Tonya Burrows
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: Romance,Mystery & Thrillers,
I’d not read books one and two – clearly the books in this series are connected and I just thought it was that they were brothers, but there’s also an overall story theme with several connected plots and references to things and people from earlier books. Still, I kept up, its not unclear and difficult to work it out, but I think maybe I’d have enjoyed it more if I’d read the others…Dunno, maybe, maybe not, it’s always difficult to tell and I don’t usually have any issues jumping into series.
So, we’ve Shelby and Reece who are total opposites. On the surface they bitch and annoy each other buts that’s covering a searing sensual attraction. I liked them both as individuals but together – well, they had some steamy scenes but as personalities I wondered just how they ever got that far. Reece was awful in one scene, said some horrible things to Shelby, on top of some earlier offensive remarks. I wondered just why she cared so much for him, he was so much a jerk to her, pompous, pretentious and arrogant. She’s an OTT person and has made some (a lot!) of mistakes but she didn’t deserve the contempt he seemed to be showing her. Even though he regrets it, and apologises I don’t think I could have been as unforgiving as she was.
Still, its not just the romance, though once they got into it they were hot and heavy at every chance, but there’s the mystery of the fires, the issues potentially affecting Reece’ business. He needs that to stay profitable to keep his brothers business afloat. I didn’t see why they didn’t do something about that, but it seems they’re all wrapped up in individual issues and just rely on Reece to sort the financials and problems out…maybe that’s why he’s so much Mr Responsible and doesn’t ever let himself relax, and he sees Shelby as all the things he wants to do but can’t? Maybe that’s why he’s so hard on her?
Its a fun story, but I wasn’t gripped totally, and found some of the backstory behind the events a bit confusing. They may have been in the earlier two reads but I’m not sure. They certainly weren’t major plots then from the descriptions, although they seemed pretty important now. Some of them were believable to a degree but there was one, someone with a huge impact on Shelby and her actions, that I just couldn’t believe in. I can’t see that would happen…and Reece being …..nope, can’t see that. Just can’t, not at his age, and with his attractiveness.
So overall, a fun read, a sexy story, but with parts that for me stretched credibility. The build-up to the suspense was good, kept me wondering how, why and how but I just found some of the revelations a bit odd and hard to believe.
Stars: three and a half, a mixed read for me, some parts I really liked, some were just hard to believe in.
