Untamed, (Thoughtless 4) S.C. Stephens
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: Romance, N/A
Thoughtless and the follow ups were among the first NA reads I found, and I loved them. Now its Griffins turn to show his story, and this book is written from his POV. That gave me problems and to be honest I was getting really tired of reading just how Awesome he thought he was. I struggled though first half, got so fed up of Griffin, I don’t remember him being that selfish and plain rude/obnoxious. I remember him as being arrogant, crude and overly sexual but devoted to the band, always making jokes, even if they were crude ones, and being a loud, larger than life but at heart good guy. Griffin here doesn’t seem to have any of those features apart from that he adores Anna and Gibson. He’s simply so rude, so selfish and self obsessed that I found the first 40% of the book really hard going, and has to restart several times where usually i read right through a book, time permitting of course.
Then it started to pick up. It was clear he was frustrated and I did feel for him when he kept getting a flat No from the band, when they just wouldn’t even consider any of his suggestions – Ok, most of them were puerile but he could have been encouraged to take a larger role, to practise, to have lead for one song once he was good enough….but all he got was a No, so I understood when he felt he’d got as far as he could if they’d never consider him for more. His actions though – typical Griffin OTT, and even in the way he did it. From then on I got much more into the story and the last 30% was heart breaking, incredibly emotional and made the book for me. It had all the angst and emotion that make NA reads so gripping. I loved seeing how he changed, and how the others reacted to him.
Anna was an absolute star here, and the ending was very surprising, satisfying but didn’t take the safe, predictable route that would have been easier, instead we got more heartbreak and a chance for Griffin to finally show everyone the man he is, the man that’s been hidden for so long, and that only Anna could see was waiting to come out. If only the start had been better it would have been a five star – as it is its a 2 for the fist part and a solid five for the last with a kind of 4 in the middle. .
Stars: Its a 3.5 – 4. such a shame about that start IMO – still, it’ll work for many. I’m just disappointed that it didn’t for me. The last 40% was a very well deserved five.
