Genre: Sci-fi & Fantasy
I liked the sound of this, sadly it didn’t really work for me for a number of reasons.
It feels very YA – I do read some YA novels, some work for all ages, but this one feels that the plot is just too simplified for me. I need a bit more meat in a read, plots that make me wonder what’s going to happen next. I also felt for a long while while reading that maybe I’d missed some kind of prequel, though I hadn’t, as there’s no kind of explanation of what warriors are, why Reyna isn’t one, why they all live in a Village and what they actually do….The book just seems to revolve around what Reyna is but without explaining why the other warriors hate her – its can’t just be simple prejudice given she’s their Chieftains sister. When we get to the end I really didn’t feel we’d advanced much from the beginning by way of what was going to happen in the future.
Then there’s Reyna and her best friend and brother’s Mate Kirby. I don’t know how old they are but Reyna’s brother has been chieftain for over a hundred years, so clearly they have a long life span. We do know there was a serious incident where Kirby nearly died over forty years back, so why on earth do the two act like a couple of young teens. Lets see: dangerous Fae out to kill Reyna, her flat trashed the day before and no-one knows why they want her, plus it seems they can’t best them in a fight, so why on earth did the two decide it was a good idea to ditch the guards for a few hours when out? Young teens might, people of their age? No…
There’s some basic editing needed too, lots of they’re/their/there and your/you’re errors. I don’t mind a few – we’re all human and nothing’s ever perfect but there are far too many. Plus some character names getting swapped around especially towards the end with Nolan and Wyatt – I had to keep backtracking to see who exactly was meant to be doing or saying whatever. When you’re putting your work out to the public it needs to be the best you can make it. Editing isn’t something to be skimped.
Stars: Sorry it’s a Two, Its an interesting idea, but for me it isn’t one I’ll continue with.
