Suddenly in Love, Julia London

Suddenly in Love,  Julia London

Genre:  Romance

My first read of Julia’s novels, although she’s written over two dozen…there’s so many great reads around but they get lost in the hundreds of thousands of books out….Still, I enjoyed this and now its an author name I can look out for 🙂

So, Mia, poor Mia. I feel for her, I’ve always felt a bit like she does, that I’m treading a different path to others, that I’m always on the outside. Some people just don’t fit in, and like her I love to paint but can’t do it to the degree I’m successful. I’d love to have her talent with clothes though, they sound Wonderful, and I’d love to make things in the style she does. My poor daughter would hate it though, she already thinks I’ve a weird clothes sense, my addiction to sparkle and glitter bemuses her but she puts up with it. she even bought me some wonderful bright fuchsia pink glitter covered ankle boots….I adored the descriptions of Mia’s clothes – I’d love to wear them….

Having tried The Big City poor Mia hasn’t succeeded, and she’s now back home in the little town where everything revolves around Summer People. Its like that where I live on the coast, without tourists many businesses just wouldn’t succeed. Those few summer months cover the long cold winter ones.

She’s working for her aunt, overseeing renovations in The Ross House, a sprawling mansion type home, recently sold and for which her aunt has got the coveted renovation contract. Poking round in the kitchen for coffee one morning Mia’s assaulted by a grimy, smelly, surly individual that she thought was a hobo when she met him earlier, and tries to whack him with a Le Creuset pan – only the best of course. Luckily she doesn’t – that would have killed him and it’d be a short story!! She’s horrified to find out he’s the owner’s son, apologises and tries to keep out of his way. Somehow though they keep crossing paths and eventually she has to tell him he…well…Stinks.Reeks. Smells really bad and looks disgusting.

That shocks him, Brennan’s been in a deep depression after his band mate died, in a funk with music and song writing and come home to – well, he doesn’t know really, just knows he had to get away. After Mia’s revelation he realises just how far he’s let himself go, it’s a bit of a shock to him but he  picks up a bit, showers and changes and starts to feel better. Somehow he can’t get Mia out of his mind and when she sees the clean Brennan and gets to know him she finds she’s hoping to see him more and more, and they drift into a romance. Hot, steamy, passionate romance, the stuff of dreams and Mia’s gone against all her usual “stay away from summer people “ rules. They leave and romances with them just end in heartbreak, but such was the sizzle between them she simply couldn’t stop it, though she tried.

Brennan, he’s a great guy too and I can see why he hid his identity, and of course having done it and then having changed feelings for Mia, when is a good time to say “ah,. sorry and all that but actually I’m…”?  Of course secrets never stay that way and his gets revealed right at the wrong point for him, and soon the mansion and town is swarming with media looking for a story.

I loved the characters here, Brennan and Mia, his mum, the ditzy shopaholic but loving lady who just wants the best for him, Mia’s aunt, who runs her business with terrifying disorganisation, Wallace – bitch queen extraordinaire who’s her right hand man, and of course all the rest of Mia’s extended family. They make for a great mix and fit perfectly into the story.

Its got the perfect ending too, for both of them, slightly unconventional but it fits who they are and shows just how much Brennan respect Mia’s career choice. I was so glad for that, after all her struggles to be accepted, and not to always be asked to be “normal” in dress and behaviour. She needs to be treasured for the person she is, and not moulded to some other type just to please everyone else. Its a story I really enjoyed but a one off read for me, its not got that “must read again” factor that many fives have for me.

Stars: Five, a great read, though I think its a one off for me.
