Genre:  Romance, Literary Fiction

This is one of those books I loved and yet hated at times, one that’s hard to review without feeling I’m being nit picky.

I loved the setting, the feeling I was there with Hallie and Jackie, feeling the struggle, feeling “in” the time period with them – and I know nothing of America in practical terms only through books, but whether its authentic or not it felt very, very real to me. The bigotry, the bias, the two faced politics and the dreaded KKK, something that still pervades to this day in places 😦

I liked Hallie and Jackie and yet…got so cross with her infatuation for Garth. He was sullen and rude to her right from the start. Yes he’s had a bad experience with women – well one anyway, and he does have a great responsibility, but he took it out too strongly on Hallie. He did warm a bit, but I never was quite convinced of anything real between them, and the ending didn’t feel as satisfactory as it would if I really felt the love, the caring and tenderness.

I liked Rory, but didn’t really understand his actions towards the end, not the ultimate big drama bit, but why he did what he knew would hurt Garth so much.

The other characters were great, whether “good” or not so good, even the downright selfish and two faced Raford had a strong character part and felt very genuine.

I felt the plot was a little slow paced for me, i did enjoy the story but at times it dragged, and I felt it was slow going and not much happening. I guess overall it’s one I’m glad I read, loved the writing style, enjoyed as a historical novel more than a romance, but wouldn’t reread.

Stars: three, a mixed read for me.

About jeanniezelos

I'm an avid reader, love my kindle and I have my head in a novel for hours daily : ) Mum used to say I'd read toilet paper if it was printed- it wasn't, so i had to contend myself with the back and sides of the cereal packets. I've always Needed to read and we had few books when i was a child hence my penchant for reading anything including adverts then... I review mainly contemporary, erotic and paranormal romance books though dystopian and urban fantasy also appeal. I'm currently rated around the 300 mark on for my reviews. I try to keep them structured and to say what I do and don't like about a book so other readers can use my review as a guide to whether they may enjoy the book.
