Then She Was Born: Born to be different, surviving to make a difference by [Gentili, Cristiano]

I haven’t yet read this book, but its part of KU and on my kindle now.

The author is the founder of #HelpAfricanAlbinos . His new novel is “Then She Was Born” which also forms part of an international human rights campaign, which has been endorsed by Pope Francis, the Dalai Lama and eleven Nobel Peace laureates who lent their voices and who each read aloud a different sentence of the novel, recording a video message and being pictured alongside the official hashtag #HelpAfricanAlbinos.

“The She Was Born” is an independently published work of fiction that meets the same standards as books published by mainstream publishers. This suspenseful novel is a true page-turner and hopefully will grab you by both arms and won’t let go until you’re winded, exhausted, and begging for a conclusion.

Synopsis.
A child is born and the joy of her parents turns to horror. The child is different, in a way that will bring bad luck to their superstitious community. The tradition should be for her to be abandoned, but Nkamba, the grandmother, is allowed to care for her.
Naming her Adimu, Nkamba raises her as her own. Adimu is constantly marginalized and shunned by the community, although her spirit remains undiminished and full of faith. But when she encounters the wealthy British mine owner Charles Fielding and his wife Sarah, it is the beginning of something which will test them all.
As Charles Fielding’s fortunes wane, he turns in desperation to a witch doctor whose suggestion leaves him horrified. But as events begin to spiral out of control he succumbs to the suggestions and a group of men are sent on a terrible mission. The final acts, of one man driven by greed and another by power, will have a devastating effect on many lives.

Streams Of Consciousness Poetry book by Kindred Spirits, a poetry group.

I haven’t read this book so its a promotional post today, not a review. I admire the group for actually doing something tangible, usually people Talk grand ideas but don’t get round to Doing anything about them. Well done for achieving this.

A poetry workshop to celebrate Black History Month last October has now led to a group of Kingston University students anticipating the publication of their first book of poems which was released in late March.
The book, Streams of Consciousness, is a compilation of poems students across faculties, and includes collaborations with award winning poets Deanna Rodgers and Sabrina Mahfouz. The authors wrote about subjects they are passionate about, but the themes are ones that all can relate: loneliness, love, joy, and family.
The original poetry workshop was last year and this year was dedicated  to getting it published.

It started as a group of people with no experience or some experience of writing poetry and we surprised ourselves with what we were capable of creating.
It seemed a waste to let all the talent disappear without being seen so we decided to write the book. Deanna and Sabrina heard about it and were so impressed with the writing they asked to be a part of it, which is a huge compliment and endorsement of everyone’s work.
We had our official launch on Monday the 29th of June which featured live performances, readings, and networking at the Poetry Café in Covent Garden.
When we hear a poetry project most of us will picture arts students, however it’s quite different in this case.

Kindle Scout

Well, I saw on another blog that an author was pleased one of his books had been chosen via this – I’d never heard of it so as usual off I went to satisfy my curiosity….the web sends me off on lots of detours when I’m doing one thing (in this case checking emails) and something spurs my curiosity. I could waste spend hours reading about all sorts of things. I love information and there’s so much to find – Google really is my friend!
Anyway Kindle Scout is a place for authors to submit their books and readers to nominate them for a prize. What’s the prize you ask – well how does this sound: . Selected books will be published by Kindle Press and receive 5-year renewable terms, a $1,500 advance, 50% eBook royalty rate, easy rights reversions and featured Amazon marketing.
As far as I can find its free, but sadly only for US authors.

You US people get everything long before the rest of us….I have no idea why. So if you’re self publishing, a US author why not submit your book? As ever though read the T&C first and make sure it’s right for you. There may be catches I’ve not seen.

I’m not sure how long it’s been around but there are not many books on there currently – less than 100 I’d guess so pretty good odds 🙂

Most of all? I’m definitely, under no circumstances, supposed to sleep with him.

Excerpt

Chelsea tries to roll over but I don’t let her. Instead, I shift to my knees and push her ass into the air. I grab my two pillows and shove them under her stomach. She doesn’t resist but she does complain.

“Really? I’m still going to be punished?” she huffs into the comforter.

I smooth a hand over one very round ass cheek. “If you don’t like it, I’ll stop.” I give the ass another little tap, enjoying the shimmy of her curves in response to the strike.

“Promise?”

“I promise you’re going to get so wet you’ll be begging for more.”

I give her a harder slap this time and then check between her legs. I smile when at the evidence coating my fingers. She’s turned on but if she wants to play the game of the unwilling victim, I’m down with that too. Role playing is definitely on my checklist.

“Your heart rate is beating pretty fast, Chels. You sure you don’t like this?”

She squeezes her legs together. “I don’t like it.”

“But you’re not telling me to stop,” I observe. She doesn’t respond so I give her another light swat.

At her continued silence, I slap her again, this time on her lower thighs, and then again, along the upper curve of her ass. I pull her panties down and spank her in earnest, making sure between each swat that she’s with me. Soon her heavy breathing fills the room and instead of moving away, she begins thrusting against my open palm.

Off Limits by Ruby Dixon

He shouldn’t touch me, but he does.

Late one night, in the middle of danger, he makes me feel things I shouldn’t.

And I know I shouldn’t want more…but I do.

Because hooking up with me? It could cost him his life.

Lucky…isn’t. In fact, she’s considered ‘off limits’ to the Bedlam Butchers because she’s caused them nothing but bad luck in the past. As a bonus? She’s also the president’s kid sister. Single and lonely? That’s Lucky’s way of life. Now, the Eighty-Eight Henchmen are harassing her and they’re out for blood.

Solo…is. In a club where pairing up with a brother to watch your back is mandatory, Solo still hasn’t gotten over his partner’s death two years ago. The club’s pressuring him to name a second Treasurer, but he has to trust that person in bed and out. And it’s damn hard for Solo to trust.

But when he rescues Lucky from the Eighty-Eight, maybe it’s time for Solo to find a partner, and time for Lucky’s luck to turn around…

About the Authors

Ella, Ruby, and Kati love romance, love strong heroines, and love those oh-so-bad alpha heroes. We love stories that are hot, sexy, and dangerous. So when we got together to write this series, we only had one rule: to write the kind of romances that we love to read.

We also know how difficult it can be to carve out time for a full-length novel…and reading a book in parts isn’t always as satisfying. Our series is written for the busy romance reader in mind. In each story, you’ll find scorching heat, wild emotion, and a romance that will have you turning the last page with a happy sigh.

Mind of the Beast (Sundancer Two)

I reviewed Brian Freyermuth’s novel Demon Dance last year, and am pleased to say the sequel is now out. Co-authored with Brians’s wife Juliet it’s called “Mind of the Beast”. Brian says we get to find out much more about the characters in the Sundancer world this time around, which I think will be good. One of the problems I had was the lack of info on the various characters so I’m pleased that’s been added.

Summary

The hotly anticipated sequel to Losing Control.

I thought I needed only one thing in my life–the money and power to crush one man. But the moment I laid eyes on Victoria Corielli, my thirst for revenge was replaced by my craving for her.

No rule would keep me away; no obstacle too large to overcome. Not her will, not our differing social positions, not my infamous past. When she lost everything, I helped her pick up the pieces. When she trusted me with everything, she sealed her fate.

I’ve convinced Victoria she can put her heart in my hands. Now I have to protect it–from her shady stepfather and my business rivals, from enemies known and hidden. I’ll do anything to keep her. And I might have to prove it, because now Victoria’s risking more than her heart to be with me; she’s risking her life.

Excerpt

I want us to get married. Soon. Do you want a big wedding?”

“Married? I mean, I guess I thought you were serious but I figured…I don’t know.” Her voice trails off.

“That my proposal of marriage was somehow insincere? I’ve never wanted anything more. I just didn’t want to pressure you because of all the emotional upheaval you’re experiencing now.” Rolling over so she can see me and judge the sincerity for herself, I declare, “I want you to be my wife. The mother of any children we have. My partner in life. I want that to happen now so that I can introduce you as Mrs. Ian Kerr.”

Her eyes close for a moment and beneath the lids, silent tears leak out. Her words, though, are classic. “Maybe you should take my name. You can be Ian Corielli and I’ll introduce you as Mr. Victoria Corielli.”

“As long as it means you’re mine in the eyes of the world, I’ll be Mr. John Smith.”

She wraps her arms around my neck and clings to me. This time the shudders I’m soothing are from maybe, possibly, hopefully joy for our future. “I’m okay with Victoria Kerr,” she chokes out. “You better give me a big rock and lots of flowers since you’re proposing to me while we’re naked.”

“I proposed to you when I first took you to the house on the Long Island Sound.”

“You didn’t propose. You said that you wanted me to be your wife and fill your big house with lots of little people.”

“That’s a proposal.”

“It was a demand.”

“It was a request couched as a demand.”

Her body is shaking with laughter. “You’ve been in charge for too long. That was no request.”

Pushing to my knees, I reach into the nightstand and retrieve the box I bought before Sophie died. Her eyes grow huge and her hands come up to the cover her mouth. I flip the box lid open, pluck the ring out and toss it aside.

Lifting her shaking hand in mine, I slide the ring down her finger.

“When I was fifteen I made a hundred different stupid vows. I’d avenge my mother. I’d rise to the top of Wall Street and smite everyone down. I’d crush Richard Howe beneath the sole of my boot. I’d win at everything. But I never wished for happiness because I didn’t know what it was until you came into my life. How could I want something I didn’t know was missing? Now, everything I’ve achieved pales in comparison to having you love me. When I say that you’re my heart, my everything, those aren’t just words. They are the only truth in my world. I’d give up money, revenge, success, as long as I could lie down next to you at night and wake up with your face beside mine.

There is no greater achievement in my life than having you fall in love with me and I recognize on some mysterious level that is pure luck. I need you to marry me and be my wife. I need you to be the mother of my children. I need you because without you I am nothing. I am a pile of bones and flesh filled with misery. You bring me to life. Love me, marry me, be with me in this life and into all the ones we live from this point ever after.”

“Well, since you put it like that, I guess I must.” She rises and kisses me. Our mouths sealing the promises we’ve made to another one another.

I make love to her again then, slowly. We barely move. I just slide in and we rock together and allow the strength of our emotions to carry us into the heaven.

Summary
I’d do anything to keep my mother alive.

Anything, including ask Ian Kerr for help. I don’t know much about him, except that he has more money than some small countries. And he’s willing to spend it on me. Just one catch: there’s a string attached, and not just the one I feel pulling me into his arms and his bed. There’s also the plan for revenge he wants my help with.

Every time he says my name, it makes my body shiver and my heart stutter. I know he’s going to wreck me, know there won’t be anything left of me but lust and sensation by the time he’s done with me, but even though I can see the heartbreak coming towards me like a train, ready to crash into me, I can’t get out of the way. I want what he makes me feel. Want what he’s offering.

This may have started out as something to save my mother, but now…now it’s about what he makes me feel. I’m in danger of losing everything that’s important. Worse? Ian’s whispered words and hot caresses are making me believe that’s okay.

*****************************************************8

“Bad morning?”

The question comes from a rich deep voice to my right. Some stupid actor, probably. The notes of his voice are perfectly modulated as if he spent years perfecting the tone and depth to reach the biggest audience.

“Yeah, what’s it to you?” I challenge because I’m not in the mood to be chatted up by some wannabe in an off, off Broadway production who wants to try out some new lines on a messenger girl.

My sneering gaze melts right off my face when it lands on the owner of the voice. Dark haired and dark eyed, the stranger gives me a slow smile as I take him in. He’s tall, much taller than my five foot four inch frame. I have to trek upward to see the entire package.

And there’s so much to appreciate from his trim waist to the wide shoulders encased in a gray wool suit coat that fits him so well I wonder if he was sewn into it. Tiny stitches on the lapel mark it’s expensive provenance. A dark tanned neck gives way to a firm chin and lush lips.

Bee stung is the description that I’ve heard used to describe the same look on super models. Those lips are about the only soft thing on his face. Those lips and a hollow on the side of his face that appears when those plush lips curve upward. The divot is too shallow and wide to be termed a dimple, but it’s just as devastating.

One hand is stuck in a pocket and his jacket is pushed behind the hand to reveal a flat stomach. No desk paunch on this guy. There’s an intense sexual aura about him. The nonchalant stance, the dark gaze, the lush lips are all an invitation to rip the buttons of his snowy white shirt apart and see exactly what lies underneath all of those fabrics.

I stick a thumb under my jaw under the guise of giving my chin a scratch just to make sure my mouth is closed. This guy? He can practice lines with me all he wants.

*****************************************

“What makes you think I’ll be done with you?” He says and he moves my hands upward until they meet in an arch above my head and he can grip my wrists in one big fist. Free, his left hand slides down my arm, leaving a trail of goose bumps in his wake. His mouth is on my chin, my jaw, and then my neck. He’s tasting me, pressing the flat of his tongue against my racing pulse. “Maybe I’ll never be done with you and your solid gold pussy.” At the last word, he closes his mouth over that pulse point and sucks hard. The only thing holding me up is his hand around my wrist. He pumps his thigh against me and an involuntary moan escapes my lips.

“I don’t care,” I manage to choke out this obvious lie because my body cares a lot. “I’m not a toy. You don’t get to put me in Barbie’s expensive town home and play with me until you’re bored. I’m a fucking real person and my mom’s a real person. And we don’t need this shit right now.”

He doesn’t stop my diatribe but he doesn’t lift his mouth from my skin either. He’s sucking hard at the spot where my neck curves into my shoulder and his hand is under my ass, moving me backward and forward along his thigh. His other hand has worked its way under my shirt and is palming my breast, a large thumb rubbing my nipple. I realize my hands are free and that I’ve been holding them above my head while he rubs all over me. When I drop my hands to his shoulders I find I can’t push him anyway. Instead, I’m using his shoulders as leverage to grind down on his thigh.

The nerve endings of my sex are hyper sensitized and I swear I can feel every thread of his superfine wool pants. His leg moves, a tiny hitch, but it interrupts the rhythm and removes the pressure. “Don’t you stop,” I threaten him, all the heat in my tone has turned from anger to throaty desire.

“Shh, bunny, I got you.” He lifts me completely and spins me around. I have no option but to wrap my legs around him. A few quick steps and we’re in another bedroom with one giant bed and nothing much else. He tumbles me back onto the bed and then lowers himself on top of me, and there’s nothing in my field of vision but the hard planes of his face and the ruddy flush of desire on the high points of his cheekbones. He looks fierce and hungry.

Before I can capture another thought, his mouth is on mine and his hand is pushing aside the lace of my soaked panties. I’m moaning from both the feel of his thick tongue inside of my mouth and the sensation of one and then two of his fingers thrusting inside me. Sucking hard on his tongue, I lift my hips to grind against his hand.

His free hand spears my hair and tugs my head back as if he can’t get his tongue deep enough inside me. He tastes of spearmint and earthiness, of true desire. My whole body is alive and it’s straining toward him, toward completion. I brace my feet against the mattress, seeking more pressure. Breaking away from his mouth, I pant, “Harder. Fuck me harder with your fingers.”

I give him a quick once over. His suit is ruined. He never took even his coat off when he finger fucked me and I’m guessing the fragile wool wasn’t meant to be worn during any intense physical encounters. There are creases in the arms and shoulders were I clutched him and was that a … stain on his thigh. I ducked my head to hide my embarrassment. “You owe me a lot of explanations.”

“I’ll be here when you’re done. Come back and we’ll talk.”

I give him an absent nod but it’s not sufficient of a response for him. He strides over and tips my head back. “I’m having this suit bronzed, you know.”

My cheeks heat because I know he’s referring to the mark in the wool made from my arousal. He leans down and gives me a hard kiss. “Come back here tonight.” It’s a demand and not a question.

Eat Like a Woman. (and never diet again) Staness Jonekos, Marjorie Jenkins

Eat Like a Woman. (and never diet again) Staness Jonekos, Marjorie Jenkins

Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.
This book isn’t just a “diet” book, full of low fat, low calorie or low carb recipes but a more holistic book, taking the approach that we need to look at our bodies, how they work, how we gain or lose weight and how we can best influence that. I found it very interesting because it mirrors much of what I’ve long believed, and seeing it in print validates some of my theories.
I was amazed at reading the prologue where the authors tell us that almost all our medical research was, until very recently, based on data using a 70kg white male as the basis. Even as recently as the 80’s research about oestrogen and breast cancer and links were done using men. Astonishing isn’t it?? This is based on what I read in the book about US research, I don’t know how UK compares but I’d guess its similar. Finally in the 90’s things began to change but it does mean there’s a dearth of historical data about women. Though we’re talking about medical research here, there’s a fine line between drugs and food, and how we metabolise them so research has slip-over points. We all moan when our men lose weight quicker then we do when on the same diet, and this books explains that not only do women taste food differently, but we metabolise it differently, and our bodies take nutrients from it differently. No surprise then that a book abased around men doesn’t fit women very well. This book looks at what we need to be healthy, what will help us to lose those excess pounds ( or stones in my case…) and use the way our bodies work to help us not hinder us.
There’s an interesting section on the mind-body-spirit connection, and as a long term cancer survivor when my odds of surviving were very, very low I’m a strong believer in that. It just makes sense to me that we help our bodies as best we can by thinking about what we eat, and by focussing on positive energies. Its like how when we’re stuffed up inside, sniffling and feeling awful with a cold, then take a trip out into the fresh air for half an hour, garden, woods, beach – whatever – we feel so much better. An online friend with a similar type of rare cancer to mine, but hormone based, decided to do her own research and radically change her diet to eliminate as much hormone containing foods as possible. She had at the time a terminal diagnosis, still has, but her approach has meant that the tumours have remained static for many years now, when typically the disease would have progressed much further. That has to be good, and shows how we can help our bodies to stay healthy. It sadly doesn’t always work, but we owe it to ourselves to give it our best chance.
In the book the foods are divided into sections, with handy charts showing the beneficial effects they have on our bodies. The recipes are divided into groups so its easy to pick and choose, mix and match and there are more recipes on the eatlikeawoman website. Its not a strict, set in stone, xx week diet book, but one where you tailor the approach to your own life using the book as a source reference and guide. By looking at ourselves, what health issues we have we can choose what foods will best affect them, and keep us healthy. There are lots of tips such as eating at certain times, carrying healthy snacks, adding in exercise, and of course the big one – portion control. To me the strength of this book is that its so different, not a rigid approach but one that makes sense, that uses our bodies the way we need to, and not in the way that makes it so hard for us to control weight. Its not just a weight loss book, a diet book, but one where looking at what we consume and choosing carefully helps us to stay healthy, and to let out bodies be the weight they should because we’re giving them what they need.
Stars: five. Interesting book with much to think about. Its again one where I’ve got e-book and am reading on my pc , but think that an actual print book would be far better. For fiction I love my kindle but some non fiction I’m finding is best in traditional format.
